WORLD

TENNIS

DAY

THE Bahamas along with 210 countries around the world who are members of the International Tennis Federation will celebrate World Tennis Day on March 4.

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association, the governing body for tennis in the Bahamas, will be celebrating the occasion with a tennis 10s mini-tennis jamboree at the National Tennis Centre featuring more than 20 private and public primary schools in New Providence.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson is expected to officially open the World Tennis Day mini-tennis jamboree and hit out the first ball.

The BLTA hopes that through exposing more children under the age of 10 to the game of tennis, more of them would be attracted to play the game.

With the new format for teaching beginners, using smaller racquets, smaller courts, lower nets and slower balls, tennis has become an easy game to play for all.

The jamboree will feature competition amongst all the primary schools in attendance using the small court and slower balls. The competition is round robin with a main draw championship pool and a consolation back draw.

Teams will play matches from 9am until 2pm. And there will be a tennis exhibition by two former junior tennis champions.

The World Tennis Day Mini-Tennis Jamboree is being sponsored by AID, which has supported the BLTA in many of its tennis activities.

COOK-OUT

THE Masters Softball League has announced that they will hold a major cook-out on April 27 at the Archdeacon William Thompson Park, Southern Recreation Grounds.

The cook-out is to assist the league in securing the necessary funding to travel to Orlando, Florida, in July.

The league is hoping to take two teams to play against the Senior Moments softball team that has been visiting the Bahamas (Grand Bahama and New Providence) to play in a series of friendly matches in January.

Interested persons wishing to assist the league are urged to contact any official over the weekend when their playoffs are in full swing.
