Man questioned over first murders of year

A 20-YEAR-OLD man is assisting with the police investigation into the first two murders of 2013.

Police detained the man around 8:20am on Tuesday.

The double murder happened around midnight last Saturday.

Police say they received reports of gunshots being fired in the Union Village Road area. When they arrived at the scene, they found two men with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to reports, the victims were sitting at the side of a house when they were approached by a man armed with a handgun.

The suspect shot both men several times before fleeing the area on foot.

One man died on the scene, the other was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

In other crime news, a 39-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman are in custody after they were arrested for being in possession of three  unlicensed firearms on Wednesday.

According to Police reports, around 1:25am, Mobile Division Officers were on patrol in the Gulf Course Boulevard area when they saw a man and a woman in a parked vehicle acting suspiciously.

The officers conducted a search and found an unlicensed shotgun.

The man and woman were arrested and taken into custody.

Police later conducted a search of an Alexandria Road home and found two more unlicensed firearms.

Investigations are continuing.
