VOLLEYBALL

NPVA ACTION

THE New Providence Volleyball Association continued its regular season at the DW Davis Gym on Wednesday night.

In the women’s opener, the Johnson’s Lady Techs improved to 7-1 to remain in second place behind the idled defending champions Scottsdale Vixens (8-1) with a 25-13, 26-24 and 25-23 decision over the Central Gas Cougars, who slipped to 3-6 for fifth place in the standings.

Rochelle Henfield was instrumental in the win with eight points (six aces and two kills), assisted by Kendra Dawkins with five kills and an ace. Casheron Cash-Coakley finished with four digs and Tamika Saunders had 15 assists.

For the Cougars, Brittney Deveaux led the way with three kills and six aces. Dyaria Knowles and Janelle Dommika-Curtis shared a block a piece. Mechelle Moss had a game high four receptions and Rebecca Moss had seven assists.

In the men’s match, the Technicians pushed their third place record to 7-3 as they won in three straight sets over the Royal Bahamas Defense Force Blasters, who remained at the bottom of the pile in eighth place at 1-12.

The league is scheduled to be back in action with another double header at the gym starting at 7:30pm.

BASKETBALL

GSSSA ACTION

AFTER taking a break for the Christmas holiday, the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association continued its 2012/13 basketball regular season action on Wednesday.

Senior boys division

CR Walker Knights polished off the Government High Magicmen 66-44 as Van Hutchinson exploded for a game high 28 points. Gary Rolle had 17 in a losing effort.

The RM Bailey Pacers won over the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves 69-53 as Lamar Hanna scored 17 points. Kyle Wilson had a game high 18 in the loss.

Senior girls

CV Bethel routed the RM Bailey Pacers 37-8 as Shavonya Adderley had a game high 10 points.

Junior boys

DW Davis Pitbulls blasted the AF Adderley Fighting Tigers 45-25 as James Cepoudy scored a game high 13 points. Lorenzo Archer had nine in the loss.

Junior girls

SC McPherson Sharks nipped the DW Davis Pitbulls 23-22 as Devenette Ferguson scored 11 points. Donna Nottage had a game high 18 in the loss.

AF Adderley Fighting Tigers routed the LW Young Golden Eagles 29-3 as Terel Rolle scored a game high 11 points.

NPBA BASKETBALL

IN the only game played Wednesday night in the New Providence Basketball Association at the CI Gibson Gym, the Police Crimestoppers outscored the Y-Care Wreckers 112-105.

The Crimestoppers, coached by Anthony ‘Cops’ Rolle, had six players in double figures. The Crimestoppers, coached by Donnie Culmer, also had six players in double figures in the loss.

Mitchell Johnson, who played 35 minutes, had 26 points on 10-of-24 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. He also had 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Both Vernon Stubbs (five rebounds) and Jeremy Hutchinson (11 rebounds) had 19 points. Taige Adderley scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and five blocks, Carvin Cummings added 12 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals and Dion McPhee contributed 11 points.

Kevin Armstrong, who played just over 35 minutes, had a game high 29 points on 12-of-22 from the field, 1-of-2 from the three-point line and 4-of-8 from the foul line, to lead the losers.

Salathiel Dean had 19 points with 10 rebounds, Kevin Smith had 18 points and five assists, Jamarise King had 14 points with seven rebounds and Dancil Knowles had 12 points with 11 rebounds.

In the other game scheduled, the defending champions Commonwealth Bank Giants won by default over the Bahamas Baptist College Lions.

The NPBA is slated to be back in action tonight with another double header, starting at 7:30pm. Two more games are set to be played at the same time on Saturday.
