Good samaritan earns courteous driver award

JOSEPH ‘Lil Joe’ Cartwright has won an award after he stopped to help a driver.

He was named ‘Most Courteous Driver of the quarter’ after he came to the aid of driver Edward Deveaux.

Mr Deveaux, of Holmes Rock, Grand Bahama, was returning home from a fishing trip off West End, at about 1.15pm on Sunday, December 9 last year.

He was driving his Dodge Ram truck with his Boston Whaler boat hitched on a trailer going east along Queens Highway in Deadmans Reef, when the left wheel on the trailer broke off, dropping the boat down onto the road.

Shortly afterwards, Mr Cartwright came upon the scene in his truck and saw Mr Deveaux struggling with the broken down boat trailer, while parked in the eastbound lane of the highway.

The spot is an isolated section of roadway where many drivers travel at very fast speeds.

Mr Cartwright parked his truck a safe distance behind Mr Deveaux’s vehicle and trailer, to create a buffer between the trailer and the speeding drivers, then helped Mr Deveaux put the wheel back onto the trailer.

The goodwill gesture earned Mr Cartwright the December 2012 quarter award, a mahogany inscribed plaque and a gift certificate for a full tank of gasoline.
