Panic at numbers house amid fears of police shutdown

PANIC broke out an Island Luck numbers house location yesterday after patrons and employees believed they were about to be subject to a police enforced shutdown.

However, their alarm soon came to end once it was revealed that police had not turned up for that reason – but rather to conduct a walkabout in the area where Pinewood Gardens borders on to Sir Lynden Pindling Estates.

Shortly after 11am, police made their first stop to begin canvassing the public. Several officers parked opposite the numbers house, outside a school near the Charles Saunders Highway.

Not long after, the people inside hurriedly exited the establishment, and staff lowered the shutters and posted a closed sign on the door.

The business opened back up a short time later once it became clear the police had business with the community, not the numbers shop.

This year, the police are pledging to increase patrols and walkabouts in a bid to reduce the number of armed robberies and house break-ins in the Southeastern Division.
