A 60-year-old man became the country’s latest traffic fatality when he was hit by a car and then dragged nearly 1,000 feet by a second car early yesterday morning.

It happened around 12:30am Sunday on West Bay Street.

According to reports, the victim was trying to cross the road just east of Marcus Bethel Highway when he was stuck by a 2008 silver Suzuki Swift travelling west.

Sources say the driver, a Canadian, got out of the vehicle to assist the elderly man along with several persons who witnessed the accident.

While they were attending to the victim, a 2003 Ford Mustang travelling west struck the man, who was still lying on the ground, and dragged him nearly 1,000 feet stopping in front of the Arawak Cay Police Station.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the identity of the victim, but sources say he is Anthon Barry Finlayson of York Street.

A 53-year-old male driver of the Suzuki and the 32-year-old male driver of the Mustang are assisting officers from the traffic department in connection with the incident.

Investigations continue.

This latest incident marks the third traffic fatality for 2013.

There were 44 traffic deaths in 2011 and 2012.

In crime news, police arrested two men ages 29 and 21, when they were found in possession of dangerous drugs.

According to police reports, DEU officers, acting on information, conducted a search of a Honda at Kim’s Crescent and found a quantity of what is suspected to be marijuana.

The two men were arrested and taken into custody.

Hours later, around 7:30pm police arrested three men in Nassau Village after they were found in possession of a handgun.

Investigations into both matters are continuing.
