DIVISION leaders kept atop the standings in the New Providence Softball Association with a pair of Saturday night contests that went the distance at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

The Sigma Wildcats topped the Lady Hitters 9-7 in the women’s division, while the AG Construction Buccaneers got by the Arnett’s Sporting Hitmen 5-4.

Mary Sweeting delivered a game high seven strikeouts en route to the win, which moved both teams to a 6-3 record, tied for the lead in the win column, but one loss back in the loss column behind the Proper Care Pool Sharks at 6-2.

The Sigma Brackettes are currently in second place at 5-2, while the Black Scorpions continue to struggle at 2-6 and the Boomer G Operators remain in search of their first win at 0-9.

After the Hitters went three up and three down in the top half of the opening inning, the Wildcats responded to take a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Lady Hitters got on the board in the second inning with two runs, added another in the third and after holding the Wildcats scoreless in the second and third innings, came within a single run 4-3.

The Wildcats distanced themselves briefly with two additional runs in the fourth inning, only to have the Lady Hitters keep pace with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth, 6-5.

Three runs for the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth inning, and a staunch defensive effort in the top of the seventh clinched the win.

Khahtral Dorsette led the WIldcats at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, while Wandalee Burrows finished 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Shera Woodside was 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI for the Hitters and Thela Johnson was 2-3 with one run scored.

In the men’s feature, a high scoring third inning was the difference to help the Bucs edge out the Hitmen.

Thomas Davis pitched seven strikeouts in the win, while losing pitcher Alcott Forbes finished with eight.

Tied at one headed into the third inning, the Bucs scored three runs in the third to take control for good.

It was the only inning of the game where either team scored more than a single run.

The Hitmen added a run each in the third and fourth inning to come within one, but was never able to plate the equaliser as each team added a run in the fifth inning.

Eric Johnson led the Bucs at the plate with a three run home run, Ken Wood was 2-4 with two runs scored and Lamar Watkins was 1-3 with one RBI.

For the Hitmen, Keiron Munroe was 2-3 with three runs scored, while both Richard Bain and Edron Knowles were 1-3 with one RBI.

The Bucs improved to 7-1 while the Hitmen fell two behind in the loss column at 7-3.

The Mighty Mitts are in third at 3-6 while the winless Miller Rams remain in fourth at 0-7.
