Three more medals for Team Bahamas

Team Bahamas added another three medals to their total on day three of the XXVIII CCCAN Swimming Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The Bahamas now has a total of 10 medals – three gold, five silver and two bronze.

The 21-member squad has totalled 172 points for eighth place among the 18 countries in combined team scores.

Albury Higgs won her second medal of the meet when she took gold in the girls 13-14 100m breast in 1:16.90 seconds.

Daisy Ramirez of Cuba took second in 1:19.34 and Herminia Sanabria of Venezuela was third in 1:19.64.

Higgs advanced as the top seed from the preliminaries when she qualified with a time of 1:17.30.

On day one, Higgs took silver in the 200m breast in 2:47.48.

On the boys’ side of the 13-14 division, Alexander Encinar took bronze in the 100m breast in a time of 1:09.29, while Jared Fitzgerald finished sixth in 1:11.62.

In the boys 13-14 100m breast, both Alexander Encinar (1:12.63 and Jared Fitzgerald (1:13.50) qualified for the final.

Mikel Schreuders of Aruba took first place in 1:08.37 and Alexander Rodriguez of Dominica was second in 1:09.21.

In the girls 11-12, Celia Campbell won bronze in the 50m back in 34.55.

Mendizabal Stafanie of Guatemala was first in 33.88 and Ana Gonclaves second in 34.32.

Gershwin Greene reached his second final of the meet and just missed his second medal with a fourth place finish in the Boys 13-14 50m back (29.49).

Greene entered the final as the second overall qualifier in 29.5.

Joshua Roberts finished sixth in the 200m free in 2:15.07 and seventh in the 50m back in 33.72.

Taryn Smith also reached two finals, finishing seventh in the 200m fly in 2:31.38 and sixth in the 50m free in 28.30.

In the boys 15-17, Perez Moss finished fifth in the 50m free in 24.36while Dionisio Carey finished sixth in the 50 back in 28.61.

Ashley Butler finished seventh overall in the Girls 18 and over 50 free in 28.36.

In the relays, the Boys 15-17 800m free team of Carey, Moss, Tre Taylor and T’Auren finished fifth in 9:16.26, while in the Boys 13-14 800m free Greene, Fitzgerald, Encinar and N’Nhyn Fernander finished fourth in 9:14.96.

Eight members of team Bahamas also advanced to last night’s finals after their performances in the preliminary rounds of the 50m breast.

Higgs went into the final with the second fastest time in 36.38, while in the Girls 15-17, Laura Morley was the third fastest qualifier in 36.02.

Victoria Russell will chase another record after posting the second fastest qualifying time in the Girls 11-12 (37.04) and Izaak Bastian qualified in the Boys 11-12 in 36.66.

Fitzgerald (31.93) and Encinar (32.37) reached their second final together in the 50m breast.

In the Boys 15-17, Dustin Tynes qualified for the final with a time of 31.15.

In the Girls 15-17, Joanna Evans swam the fifth fastest qualifying time in the 400m free in 4:42.49.

Results of the finals were unavailable up to press time last night.
