Can you give a pet a good home?

THE Bahamas Humane Society shelter is once again full to bursting with dogs and cats in desperate need of loving homes.

Kim Aranha, BHS president, said that with people continuing to surrender their pets in high numbers, the shelter is struggling to care for all the animals.

She called on Bahamians to “stop selling potcakes short”, and urged prospective pet owners to adopt local.

“It’s amazing. People are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for a mixed breed dog, when they can easily purchase a beautiful dog from our shelters for $40,” she said.

The BHS is currently engaged in a training exercise for personnel which will continue for 3-4 months.

The operation aims to increase staff efficiency in dealing with the many animals at the shelter.

The BHS is also urging members of the public to bring their pets into any of its facilities to have them spayed or neutered, as a means of helping to control the stray animal population.

In January, several local animal groups united under Operation Potcake, a 10-day spay and neuter programme which lead to the sterilisation of 2,315 stray and owned dogs.

The Humane Society is planning another Operation Potcake, which will take place January next year.
