Low turnout for FNM protest

FNM commentators criticised fellow party members for failing to show up in numbers for a protest in Rawson Square.

Early yesterday morning, the square was lined with barriers as police prepared for an internet organised protest in response to leader of the opposition Dr Hubert Minnis being barred from making certain comments in Parliament. But as the House convened yesterday morning, only about a dozen supporters were to be seen.

Commenting on the poor turnout on the FNM Facebook page “No Spin Zone”, Glenville Johnson Jr wrote: “How can Darold Miller get more people to march and ‘protest’ that the official opposition leader? If this rally was filled with people we would’ve been shocked and Dr Minnis would deserve all the credit for the crowd. Since that didn’t happen should he also take the burden of the lackluster showing?”

Other commentators defended Dr Minnis for standing his ground, pointed out that the party leader did not organise the protest, and blamed fellow supporters for their lack of enthusiasm.

But as Cornelia Elizabeth Taylor explained, many FNMs simply couldn’t take the time off work on such short notice.

“Had on my red dress today. Couldn’t make it out due to work but I’m in full support. I do think we need to use the holiday to arrange something – the reality is not too many of us can just take the day off for this.”

Melissa Wilson added: “The point is FNM’s normally don’t do this . . . AT ALL. The very fact that those folks were out there today is evidence that a climate change is taking place within the FNM.”
