NEMA assess damage and needs of residents

THE National Emergency Management Agency is assisting with an assessment exercise being conducted by the Department of Social Services in the aftermath of Monday night’s Joe Farrington Road fire.

First Assistant Secretary at NEMA, Chrystal Glinton, said the assessment will seek to determine the extent of damage to homes and how many individuals are in need of assistance.

Yesterday, a team comprising personnel from NEMA, the Department of Social Services and the Bahamas Red Cross walked through the area.

NEMA’s initial information suggests that of the estimated 400 persons living in that community, 121 are displaced, however other estimates are higher.

Of these, 36 are under the age of 17, NEMA said.

The Great Commission Ministries is providing hot meals for the victims.

The Salvation Army will provide clothing and non-perishable items, the Department of Social Services accommodations for the women and children, and the Bahamas Red Cross bedding and toiletries.
