BASKETBALL

NPBA ACTION

THE Bahamas Government Departmental Basketball Association continued its regular season action at the DW Davis Gymnasium over the weekend. The following results were posted:

Airport Authority 84, The Real Deal 66

Devon Brennen scored 16 points with eight rebounds and four assists to lead the winners. Vance McPhee had 12 points, Denard Clarke 10 points and both Demetrius Emmanual (six rebounds and three assists) and Jerio Coakley had nine points each.

In the loss, Salathial Anderson had a game high 17 points and nine rebounds, Antonio Ferguson had 16 points and four rebounds and Cedeno Hepburn chipped in with 10 points.

Tronicquest Cybots 84, NIB Kings 71

Eugene Bain scored 29 points with 14 rebounds to lead the winners. Adorn Charlow had 15 points and 11 rebounds and both Georgio Walkes (six rebounds) and Elkin Sherman added 12 points apiece.

In the loss, Chara Wallace had a game high 33 points with three rebounds and both Stephon Hall and Checo France chipped in with 12 points.

Police Crimestoppers 90, Police Enforcers 77

In a battle of the law enforcement, Jvon Goodman had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the winners. Vernon Stubbs had 15 points, Cory Cooper had 11 points, Darren Knowles 10 points and seven rebounds and Freddie Lightbourne nine points and seven assists.

Defence Force Marines 107, Bahamas Union of Teachers 102

Delvonne Duncombe ignited the winners with 40 points and six rebounds, Michael Ferguson (six rebounds) and Durchen Sands (14 rebounds) both had 13 points and Levar Carey chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.

In the loss, Mark Hanna also canned 40 points with seven assists and four rebounds. Kevin McPhee had 26 points and eight rebounds, Antonio Saunders had 18 points and six rebounds and Arison Wilon added 12 points with six rebounds.

Police Royals 122, BTC Digitals 52

Dion McPhee scored a game high 29 points with six rebounds and six assists, Kentwood Carey had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Reko Sweeting had 17 points, Kovan Strachan had 12 points and Devon Johnson contributed 11 points.

In the loss, Jorann Adderley had 19 points, Greco Evans had 12 points and seven rebounds and Jimmy Thompson ended up with 10 points.

BASKETBALL

ANDROS ELECTION

THE Andros Basketball Association held its election of officers last week. Brian Cleare was re-elected to serve as president. His first vice president is Danny Pratt. Natheria Pratt was elected to serve as the secretary and the commissioner is Michael Colebrook.

The elections were conducted by Bahamas Basketball Federation’s secretary general Clifford Rahming and assistant secretary Sharon Storr.

BASKETBALL

RODGERS CAMP

AFTER concluding its activities for the past month here on Friday at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium, Jeff Rodgers will be spending the next week in Georgetown, Exuma. The Jeff Rodgers Summer Camp will be staged on the island starting today through Friday with sessions starting at 5:30pm.

On Saturday night, the camp will close out with an exhibition game between the campers and another featuring the instructors and local players.

CYCLING

NPCA ACTION

THE New Providence Cycling Association is scheduled to kick off its second half of the 2013 season on August 5 with the 7th annual Grand Bahamas Cycling Association Road Cycling Championships. The other events scheduled for the month are as follows:

August 10 - National Individual Time Trial - 40km/24 miles individual Time Trial at Clifton Heritage Park, starting at 8am.

August 11 - NPCA Mid Week track time trial clash at 5:45pm at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex

August 21 - Mid Week Track Clash time trials at 5:45pm at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex

August 24 - NPCA 30th miles sprint championships starting at 8:10am at Clifton Heritage Park

August 25 - Track Clash at the National Cycling Track, starting at 4:45pm.

The association also notes that the Tour De New Providence is set to be held over the weekend of September 28-29.

TENNIS

AID CLAYCOURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

AID has announced that its sponsorship of the annual Claycourt Tennis Championships will continue with the hosting of the 21st edition of the tournament to be held at the Gym Tennis Club in Winton Meadows August 10-24.

The ‘AID,’ as the tournament is known, is the most popular event on the local tennis calendar and the sposors aim to surpass last year’s memorable 20th anniversary activities this year. The tournament will feature competition in nine categories, inclusive of the gentlemen and ladies singles and doubles, gentlemen’s junior vets singles and doubles, mixed doubles and the boys and girls under-18 singles.

Competitors can enter a maximum of three events.

With the rebuilding of AID’s flagship store on Wulff Road nearing completion, the company reaffirms its ongoing commitment to the tournament and tennis in general as a tool for building wholesome values in our youth and society at large.

President of the Gym Tennis Club, Dr Eric Bourne, said he and the club are happy and proud to be a part of AID’s ongoing legacy in local tennis.

The entry deadline is Wednesday, August 7 at 6pm and entries can be emailed to aidclaycourts@hotmail.com or delivered to the Gym Tennis Club in Winton Meadows before that time.

Entry forms are available at the two AID outlets in the Marathon Mall, the Gym Club, the BLTA National Tennis Center and other local cubs.

The form can also be downloaded from the BLTA website: www.blta.net.

All entrants must be fully paid up members of the BLTA.

The draws for all divisions will take place at the Gym Tennis Club 6pm August 8.
