Call to remove dumpster piled high with waste

By RASHAD ROLLE

THE remaining dumpster at Pinewood park and the unsightly garbage around it should be removed immediately to prevent people from putting from large amounts of trash around the area, according to one resident of the Pinewood constituency.

The resident – who wished to remain anonymous – told The Tribune yesterday that “I think for the minister, the garbage has been there too long for him not to have it removed already.”

Although a dumpster was located in the area so that persons could get rid of items damaged by the recent flood, the dumpster is now overflowing with garbage, encouraging persons to drop their garbage outside of it. The resident said following the recent floods, enough time has elapsed for persons to have already made appropriate use of the dumpster.

“It’s been ample time for victims of flood damage to place their damaged items in the dumpster,” he said. “I believe the solution to the problem is to take the dumpster and don’t bring it back. They’ve already removed two other dumpsters that were there. This other one shouldn’t still be here either.”

Another resident, Kevin Moss, 23, said neither Khalis Rolle, the minister for the area, nor his government should be blamed for the stacks of garbage piling around the Pinewood park. “They can’t blame the government nor the minister because they do their job to ensure the garbage is collected on time,” he said, adding: “It’s us as black people who bringing the garbage here. Yeah, the garbage truck came this morning, but if me and you and 14 other people use the bin and full it up then it will fill up quick.

“No one in Pinewood putting their garbage there,” he added. “People from everywhere but here come and put stuff there and if it can’t fit, they put it on the ground. That’s why I say don’t put this on the minister. Our minister is good. If you, as a person, see the garbage full, then carry your garbage to the dump.

“I live here. When I off, I does see persons coming from outside the area to put garbage in the dump.”

Leonard Miller, Assistant Director of the Department of Environmental Services, said the dumpster at Pinewood park is being operated by Bahamas Waste and should be removed today. “Those containers were placed there by the MP to be operated by Bahamas Waste but they should be cleared away,” he said. “I haven’t gone out there since they were put there but they should be cleared up by tomorrow.”
