SEAN McWeeney QC served as Attorney General of The Bahamas from January 1989 to August 1992. He also served as a Senator from 1985 to 1992 and as Leader of the Government in the Senate in the latter part of his parliamentary tenure.

During his time as Attorney General, the company laws of the Bahamas were modernised with the introduction of the International Companies Act and the Companies Act. Similarly, important new additions to the trust legislation of The Bahamas were introduced as well.

In April 2000, Mr McWeeney was appointed chairman of the first Judicial Review Commission to review the terms and conditions of service of Supreme Court and Appellate Court judges.

Later in the same year, he was appointed chairman of the Steering and Implementation Committees for the re-structuring and modernisation of the Royal Bahamas Police Force

In May 2002, he was appointed the chairman of the Transition Team to co-ordinate the setting up of the new government and to advise on important policy matters.

He was subsequently appointed a member of the National Security Council of The Bahamas, chairman of the Clifton Heritage Authority and chairman of a newly constituted Judicial Review Commission.

In 1998, on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Bahamian Independence, the government of The Bahamas awarded Mr McWeeney the Silver Jubilee Medal for “Outstanding Contribution to National Development in the Area of Law”.

In 2009, Sean was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel (Queen’s Counsel).
