OVER the weekend, more than 70 teams from throughout New Providence came together at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium for the official opening of the Street Legends and Urban Renewal’s Season 4 Community Basketball League.

The event, which is scheduled to run June 15 to August 30, is being held in conjunction with Vitamalt.

In addition to basketball teams from New Providence constituencies, 14 Family Island teams will be represented.

Wilton Russell, president of Street Legends, said this year marks nine years since the community basketball league has been in existence.

“Street Legends and Urban Renewal, in conjunction with Vitamalt presents “Bridging the Gap” Season number four,” he said. “During the 10-week competition, 38 constituencies will participate while we pay tribute to the late Hon Charles Maynard, former minister of youth, sports and culture.”

Russell noted that over 80 teams have been confirmed for this year’s programme.

“Once again we are delighted to have Vitamalt as a main sponsor for the sixth consecutive year,” he said. “Their participation has been outstanding and I would like to say a special thank you.”

Stacy Mackey, Vitamalt brand manager, noted that Vitamalt’s sponsorship of this community basketball league is an acknowledgment that sports is an important recreation for young people throughout the Bahamas.

New to this year’s programme is the Baby Legends division for boys and girls ages 5-7 boys, as well as ages 8-11. This division is free for all to participate in over the summer.
