Father and dedicated policeman

RETIRED Deputy Commissioner of Police John S Rolle is The Tribune’s latest honouree to feature from Mount Tabor Full Gospel Church’s chosen list of 40 fathers to honour in the year of the 40th Anniversary of Independence.

A true Bahamian son, born on the little hilltop settlement of Hartswell on the Island of Great Exuma, on September 3, 1943, John Rolle is the eldest son and second child to John C Rolle and Arimina Rolle nee Evans.

John Sidney or John S was a bright and intellectual child, and went to the All Aged School in Exuma until age 14 then moved to Nassau.

Always seeking ways and avenues to improve himself, he attended Prince William High School Evening Institute then enlisted in the Royal Bahamas Police Force in February 1965.

Dr Rolle joined the Criminal Investigation Department and later the Drug Enforcement Unit.

It was during the most critical periods in The Bahamas’ history of drug enforcement, that Dr Rolle presided over the DEU in the 1980s and 1990s.

His career in the police force has allowed him the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the world, representing the force and The Bahamas at international conferences and other important meetings.

His commitment and dedication to this force and to his beloved country quickly moved him up in the ranks to the second highest position in law enforcement in the nation, that of Deputy Commissioner of Police.

His dedicated service, with his wife Betty Rolle nee Sears a constant source of support and encouragement, earned him numerous accolades both locally and internationally, including the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM).

He retired in July 2007.

His five children are Sharmaine (Steve), Warren (Rhonda), Callisa (Edward), Michael (Cheryl), Jamal (Nakeisha).

Dr Rolle, with his wife’s support, went on to be a pastor at the Mt Olive Union Baptist Church in Hartswell, Exuma.
