Countdown to Independence continues

CELEBRATIONS across The Bahamas are being ramped up this weekend with just two weeks to go before July 10, 2013, the date of the 40th Anniversary of Independence.

On Thursday and Friday the two-day Nassau Festival of Arts and Crafts takes place in Rawson Square.

On Thursday, an opening ceremony will be followed by the arts and crafts festival and a food and wine festival. It starts at 11.30am and finishes at 7.30pm.

On Friday from 5.30pm to 10pm a celebration of Bahamian music takes place in the square.

On Saturday and Sunday Bahamians are encouraged to participate in a national fun, run and walk event from 6am on both days. No registration fee is required for the event and persons of all ages are invited to attend.

The Saturday event will begin at four different points: Arawak Cay, the R M Bailey Park, Goodman’s Bay and the S C McPherson Jr High School. The Sunday event will kick off at the Thomas A Robinson national stadium.

Later on Saturday, artists dancers, musicians, craftsmen and storytellers from across the archipelago are coming together for Kalik’s family-friendly Festival of The Bahama Islands.

The day-long party of all things Bahamian will be held at the Botanical Gardens, near Fort Charlotte and Clifford Park, in Nassau.

The highlight will be an all-Bahamian concert featuring well-known Bahamian musicians which will broadcast on ZNS-TV from 8pm.

Doors open at 10am with the celebration’s official kick-off at 12pm. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children under the age of 12 for a full day of Junkanoo music and costume building demonstrations, quadrille dancing, jewellery making, painting, percussion musical performances, fashion shows, bush tea demonstrations, crab catching and straw plaiting lessons, Cascarilla bark demonstration and more.

In the evening the Bahamas National Symphony Orchestra plays its free Independence Day gala concert at the College of the Bahamas.

Next Monday the Prison Officers Pop Band performs in Rawson Square at 1pm.

Meanwhile the National Independence Flag continues its journey around the islands.

Today it is due in Andros and tomorrow Bimini. On Friday it is scheduled for Abaco.
