POLICE are investigating a traffic accident that left one man dead and three people in hospital.

It happened around 1am Monday in the area of the Sandy Port Bridge.

Police say a gray 2005 Honda Fit, driven by a man and carrying a female passenger, was travelling east on West Bay Street when it collided with a silver 2002 Acura RXS occupied by two men.

The driver of the Fit sustained extensive injuries to the head and upper body and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The woman and the two men in the Acura were taken to hospital by ambulance. There condition could not be determined up to press time last night.

Police have not officially identified the man who died, but The Tribune understands he was Keith Hamilton.

Police are asking drivers to use extreme caution in the area of Sandy Port Plaza, West Bay Street.

The eastbound lane has been redirected due to the large amount of sand deposited there by storm surge.

Caves and Go Slow Bend are also said to be danger areas.

In other crime news, police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a man responsible for shooting a teenager on Sunday.

It happened around 5.15pm in Culmersville.

Police say the 16-year-old boy was walking near a basketball court when he heard gunshots and realised he had been shot in the thigh.

He was taken to hospital in a private vehicle, where he is listed in stable condition.

Police are asking anyone who may have relevant information to contact police on 911 or 919; the Central Detective Unit at 502-9991; or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 328-TIPS.
