Performers shine in Carifta trials

Bahamian junior athletes continued their build-up to the region’s top meet, hosted in the Bahamas for the seventh time and first in over a decade.

Expectations loom large for team Bahamas after two days of Carifta Trials this weekend at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium.

A plethora of qualifications and the opportunity to see many of the top high school athletes go head to head with a berth on the 2013 Carifta Team have set the stage for the meet March 29th-April 1st.

In the Under 20 Men, Teray Smith pulled off the sprint double in the 100m and 200m.

Smith took the century and achieved the Carifta A standard in 10.62s, followed by Cliff Resias in 10.77s, Ian Kerr in 10.79 Seconds, and Anthony Farrington in 10.85 Seconds, who all achieved the B standard.

In the 200m, both Smith and Andre Wells reached the A standard in 21.42s and 21.56s respectively.

In the Under 17 Boys, Kinard Rolle pulled off a sprint double of his own in the 200m and the 400m.

In the 200m, Rolle finished in 21.87s, followed by Keanu Pennerman in 21.97s.

Both surpassed the A standard.

In the 400m, Rolle led a trio who each surpassed the A standard of 51.00s.

He took first place in 47.91s, followed by Henri Delauze in 50.39s while Tyler Bowe - 50.66 Seconds

In Under 17 100m for Girls, Jenae Ambrose took first place in 12.15s while Simone Mason finished second in the B standard of 12.31s.

She returned to take the 200m in 24.69s, easily surpassing the A standard along with Simone Mason who finished second in 24.77s.

In the Under 17 Boys event, Keanu Penner was first in 10.96s, followed by Javan Martin and Shalome Cash who both finished in 11.15s.

In the Under 20 Women’s 100m, Devynne Charlton qualified with the A standard in 11.87s, followed by Carmiesha Cox in 11.94s and Keianna Albury third in 11.95s

Cox and second place finished Albury qualified with the A standard in the 200m in 24.03s and 24.38s respectively.

The 400m for women produced just a single qualifier in the Under 17 division when Doneisha Anderson clocked 57.54s for the B standard, and a pair in the Under 20 divison when Khadesha Hield (56.57s) and Juannae Lewis (56.94s) reached the B standard as well.

The Under 20 Men’s event, James Williams (47.40s) and Janeko Cartwright (48.26s) surpassed the A standard, while Ashley Riley (48.60s) achieved the B standard.

Xavier Coakley won the Under 20 Men’s hurdle with a qualifying time of 14.13s, Joshua Stubbs placed second in 14.38s and Kirk Lewis placed third with a time of 14.88s, all A standard times.

Stubbs returned to take first place in one of the most exciting events on day two, the 400mH, where he finished in 52.90s, followed by D’Mitry Charlton in 52.97s and Coakley third in 53.15s, again all A standard times.

In the Under 20 Women 400mH, Pedra Seymour qualified in a time of 1:01.70s, followed by Mesha Newbold’s 1:01.80s and Talia Thompson’s 1:01.9s.

The trio qualified with the A standard.

In the Under 17 300mH Vashanti Simmons and Gianna Conliffe qualified in 47.28s

The U17 group produced several qualifiers in the 800m.

In the Girls event Amber Ford reached the A standard in 2:17:08s, while in the Boys event Benjamin Najman’s personal best of 2:00.2s surpassed the A standard and Ricardo Richardson in 2:02.1s reached the B standard.

In the field, Drexel Maycock set a new Junior National record and easily qualified in the Under 20 Boys Discus with a throw of 52.53m.

He bested the mark of 48.45m set by Gerard Burrows last year.Laquan Nairn continues to soar to new heights, qualifying in both the High and Long Jump.

Nairn won the Under 20 long jump with a qualifying jump of 7.36s and took the High Jump with a leap of 2.03m

In the Under 20 Women Danielle Gibson reached two qualifying standards as well when she posted a 12.05m on her first jump triple jump and the B standard with a 5.60m in the long jump.

Ashley Oembler qualified in the Under 20 Women discus with a throw 40.07m for the A standard and reached the B standard in the shot put with a toss of 11.72m.

Andira Ferguson reached the A standard in the Under 17 Girls long jump with a leap of 5.51m

In the Under Girls 17 Shot Put, Breshae Woods had the best throw of the day with a CARIFTA qualifying 13.27m.

Serena Brown was second with a throw of 12.19m and third with a throw of 12.09m was Zhizell McKenzie.

In the Under 17 Boys long jump Therico Rolle (6.51m) reached the A standard with his first place finish while Darius Major was second (6.38m) in surpassing the B standard.

On his opening throw of the Under 20 Boys Javelin, Denzel Pratt qualified with a throw of 57.53m.

Perry Adderley won the Under 17 Boys discus with a toss of 38.68m, to surpass the B standard of 37.00m

In the Heptahlon, Charles Sealy took first place but it was the performance of Desmond Major that stood out.

Sealy easily surpassed the necessary 4000 points with his 4534, but Major returned from a day one injury and brief hospitalisation to qualify with 4414 points.
