Two in hospital after stabbings

POLICE reported a busy and violent weekend that saw the armed robbery of a Mackey Street business by four men, a string of arrests, and two stabbing incidents occurring within hours of each other which left three men in hospital.

The first stabbing reportedly occurred shortly after 8pm on Friday. Two men were at Baillou Hill Road when they got into an altercation with another man and were stabbed. They were both taken to hospital in a private vehicle.

In the second incident, a 54-year-old man was stabbed multiple times shortly after 11pm while at Eaton Street in Yellow Elder Gardens, also on Friday.

The condition of the victims was unknown.

Police appealed to members of the public to “settle their arguments with words and not with acts of violence”.

Police are also hunting for four men responsible for robbing a Mackey Street business at gunpoint on Friday night. Around 10.40pm, the four men – all allegedly armed with handguns – entered the establishment, demanding cash.

The gunmen reportedly took an undetermined amount of cash – as well as several handbags and cell phones – before they fled in an unknown direction.

Police also say six men were arrested in connection with “a serious offence” and one 39-year-old Montell Heights woman was arrested on disorderly behaviour allegations on Friday.

The group was arrested by Selective Enforcement Team (officers shortly after 5pm at Wulff Road, east of Peardale. Officers also arrested two more men on Saturday after finding an unlicensed shotgun and a large quantity of assorted ammunition.

The weapon was found by officers around 12.30pm after they executed a search warrant on a home.

A 20-year-old Scott Street man is also police custody after the discovery of a handgun and ammunition. Officers made the arrest shortly after 2am on Saturday in the area of Nassau and Virginia Streets.

On Friday evening, officers recovered a handgun from a vacant Minnie Street property around 8.20pm and no arrests were made in connection with that incident.

In addition, five people were arrested on outstanding warrants, a 26-year-old Sea Breeze man was arrested in connection with a murder, a 17-year-old Minnie Street boy was detained in connection with an armed robbery, a 30-year-old Kemp Road man was detained on allegations of stealing from a vehicle and a 31-year-old Union Village man was arrested in connection with a drug matter.
