Bahamas Waste supports Nassau Village clean-up

The entire Nassau Village constituency is getting an environmental boost, and being transformed into a clean community if organisers of the Nassau Village Restoration Initiative have their way.

Beginning last weekend, the Nassau Village Urban Renewal Centre, in partnership with the South East Rotaract Club, Holy Cross Anglican Church, Bahamas Wasteand other partners and volunteers, began a massive effort to restore the community to its original stature as one of the more attractive and peaceful communities on New Providence.

The area’s MP, Dion Smith, who serves as Deputy Speaker in the House of Assembly, also played a hands on role.

Inspector Kirk Douglas, officer in Charge of the Nassau Village Urban Renewal Centre, said the exercise was focusing on clean-up as well as crime reduction.

“We want to clean up the whole constituency, and do it one block at a time.”Inspector Douglas said. “We’re cleaning up roadsides and overgrown lots, removing derelict vehicles and even giving out flyers.

“We want to partner with the business community and, in fact, the entire community of Nassau Village is involved.”

Bahamas Waste has committed to partner with Urban Renewal in areas it serves for residential garbage collection, such as Grants Town, Englerston and Centreville, along with areas such as Nassau Village.

The BISX-listed company strategically placed large, open top containers in designated areas on Saturday. The containers were systematically emptied as they were filled by residents and volunteers.

Last weekend’s designated areas for bin placement included Alexander Boulevard, next to the park; Williams Lane and Stack Avenue, next to the Urban Renewal Office; Hope Gardens, next to the park; and at Esmerlda Avenue and Butler Street.

Inspector Douglas predicted that there will be a major clean-up thrust on a continuing basis every quarter, ensuring Nassau Village stays clean. He also promised a quarterly newsletter.
