ELIMINATED

JUSTIN Roberts and Kevin Major Jr ended another outstanding week of competition at the Dayton Beach ITF event on Thursday.

Roberts suffered a 3-6, 2-6 loss in his third round singles match to No.4 seed Alp Horoz of Turkey in a very competitive match that saw most games going to deuce.

Roberts and Major also went down in the quarter finals of the doubles 6-4, 3-6, 10-2 to the American No.2 seeded team of Tommy Paul and Aron Pierce

SAILING

MOXEY WINS

SCULLING TITLE

DURING the 60th annual National Family Island Regatta in Elizabeth Harbour, George Town, Exuma, Bahamian Brewery staged their ‘Man in the Boat’ Sculling races. Winning the title was Clay Moxey, followed by Clayton Bain. Stephen Rolle got third place.

As a result of his victory, Moxey will be awarded a trip to Grand Bahama later this year to compete in the finals of the National Sculling Championships that will take place during the Grand Bahama Regatta. Moxey will get to compete against all of the winners of the other sculling events that will be staged this year during the various regattas and homecoming celebrations.

Bahamian Brewery and Sands Beer staged the sculling event using their four E Class boats - Sands, Sands Light, High Rock and Strong Back. Each of the winners carted off a trophy and they were presented with a combination of the beer products for their effort.

The company was also one of the major sponsors of the regatta and they also sponsored the E Class competition.

According to Lynden Johnson, marketing manager at Bahamian Brewery, Sands Beer was quite pleased with their participation in this year’s regatta, which was held as a part of the Bahamas’ 40th anniversary of Independence. He noted that the competition was quite keen and they are looking forward to the rest of the competition.

PRIMARY

SCHOOLS MEET

THE Catholic Primary Schools is slated to complete its Track and Field Meet today at the original Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium, starting at 9am. Participating schools are respective defending junior and primary champions St Cecilia’s Strikers and St Francis/Joseph Strikers, Xavier’s Giants, St Thomas More Sparks, Our Lady’s Blue Flames and St Bede’s Crushers.

As a point of note, St Cecilia’s won the title for the past five years. This will be the final year of competition for both Our Lady’s and St Bede’s, both of whom will be closing their doors for good at the end of the school year by the Catholic Board of Education.

The meet got started on Thursday with competition in the field events.

SOFTBALL

NPSA PRE-SEASON

THE New Providence Softball Association is scheduled to continue its pre-season tournament tonight in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex with a triple header on tap. In the 7pm opener, the Lady Hitters face the Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks. That will be followed by the Sigma Wildcats against the Sigma Bracketts. The feature game is a men’s encounter with the Hitmen taking on the Miller Rams.

The pre-season got started on Thursday night. The regular season is scheduled to start on Saturday, May 11.

BASEBALL

ELEUTHERA LEAGUE

AFTER a very successful tournament last week, the Eleuthera Junior Baseball League of Rock Sound completed its regular season games in Rock Sound with the Spanish Wells teams winning the pennants in all three divisions. The best 3-out-of-five championship series is set to begin on Saturday in Spanish Wells.

Coach Pitch Division

The Rock Sound Coco Plums evened up the regular season play with the Spanish Wells Hook n’ Jook by defeating them and forcing a two way tie for first place. However, the Hook n’ Jook team won the pennant by most runs tie break rule in the head-to-head play. The Hook n’ Jook will take on the Coco Plums in the championship series.

Minor League Division

The Spanish Wells Sluggers defeated the Green Castle Scotiabank Dragons 21-7 in their final game of the season. The Sluggers won the pennant in this division with a perfect 6-0 record. They will take on the Rock Sound Sports Center Marlins in the championship series.

The Marlins placed second at 4-2. The Green Castle Scotiabank Dragons were third at 2-4 and the Harbour Island Briland Tornados fourth at 0-4.

Junior Division

The Spanish Wells Harbourside Contenders defeated the Rock Sound NuView Stingrays 13-1 to close out their season and clinch the pennant with a perfect 6-0 record. The NuView Stingrays were second with a 0-6 win loss record. The Harbourside Contenders are set to take on the NuView Stingrays in the championship series.

SILVER LIGHTNING

HONOURING

ROBINSON

THE old Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium will be buzzing with activities once again this Saturday as the Silver Lightning Athletic Club hosts its annual Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Classic.

The event will feature competition in all age groups from under-7 to the open male and female categories. Medals will be presented to the first three finishers in each category, while ribbons will be distributed to the winners in the under-13 categories and lower.

The meet is being sanctioned by the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) and the Bahamas Association of Certified Officials (BACO) will officiate. The meet director is Rupert Gardiner. All of the local clubs are expected to participate.
