FORMER Cabinet Minister Loftus Roker yesterday said he does not sympathise with Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell on his plight to clean up the country’s illegal migrant problems.

Speaking to reporters as he recalled his tenure as Immigration Minister in the late 70s, Mr Roker said Mr Mitchell “deserves whatever he was getting now”.

Mr Roker has been praised for his strict enforcement of immigration policies while he was in office.

He said: “I have no sympathy for the present minister. (Because) when one Christmas we had a group of Haitians at Fox Hill Dr Johnny Lowe and Fred Mitchell were marching in front of the prison to say how we were treating these Haitian men and women who are locked up and that the food was so bad.

“They never said that we had Bahamian women locked up there too. They didn’t worry about them. The Bahamian women were eating the same food that the Haitian people were eating. They felt that they shouldn’t be there but they were marching up and down. So now Mr Mitchell deserves whatever he is getting.”
