Hosts miss out on semifinal place

The Bahamas suffered their first defeat in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying tournament this afternoon, in a 9-2 thumping by the USA.

They now miss out on the semifinals on goal difference, following El Salvador's 8-4 win over Jamaica.

It was the USA who drew first blood, with a fine turn and shot.

A second goal put the hosts further behind, but the Bahamas clawed their way back into the game, finishing the first third just 2-1 down.

The USA asserted their dominance in the second period, however, scoring four times without reply.

And that pattern continued into the final third, despite a stunning top corner consolation for the Bahamas which brought the noisy home crowd to their feet.

The USA scored three more to win convincingly and move into the semis.
