TENNIS

BLTA TO HOST ITF OFFICER

THE Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association is scheduled to host the new International Tennis Federation officer for Central America and the Caribbean this weekend to discuss the development of tennis in the Bahamas and to look at the development plans for 2013 and beyond.

John Goede of Suriname, a level 3 tennis coach with extensive tennis coaching and travel experience, is currently in New Providence. During his visit, he will be making courtesy calls on the top sporting organisations, as well as conducting tennis clinics for top junior residents in Nassau.

Goede is also scheduled to visit Grand Bahama on Saturday to meet with the newly elected Grand Bahama Tennis Association and to conduct a tennis training session for the top junior tennis players in Grand Bahama.

NEILLY AND LUNN OUSTED

TIMOTHY Neilly and Justin Lunn both fell short in the last round of the F12 Men’s Tennis Futures in Orange Park, Florida, and were not able to get into the main draw as lucky losers. Neilly lost to Julien Belair (Canada) 6-0, 6-3 and Lunn fell to top seed Catalin-lonut Gard of Romania 6-6, 6-0. The next stop is the Tampa Futures Men’s qualifying which begins this Friday.

SUMMER CAMP

THE Gym Tennis Club, headed by pro Dentry Mortimer, is scheduled to hold its Summer Camp 2013 July 1 to August 30.

The purpose of the camp is to teach strategies and techniques through drills and friendly competition. The club is inviting all junior tennis players or persons that are interested in learning the game and having fun in a friendly and safe environment to come out and participate. HONOUR FOR

FREEDOM BAPTIST

FREEDOM Baptist Academy is slated to hold a special assembly 9:30am Wednesday, May 15 to honour and celebrate their students’ academic and athletic achievements over the past seven months, according to principal Vinzina C Major.

A number of students have also made the honour roll. The girls’ basketball team was first runners-up in three major tournaments, inclusive of the 28th Father Marcian Peters, Temple Christian Academy and Patty Johnson tournaments. The team also got third in the Bahamas Scholastic Athletic Association (BSAA) basketball playoffs. Two of the girls on the team were also named to the All-Tournament team in both the Geneva Rutherford Basketball Classic and the Fr Marcian Peters tournaments.

ELEUTHERA JR

LEAGUE FINALS

THE Eleuthera Junior Baseball League of Rock Sound began its 2013 championship series in all three divisions on Saturday past in Spanish Wells. The Spanish Well teams continued to dominate the league with wins in all three divisions to take a one game lead in the best-of-five game series.

Coach Pitch Division - The Spanish Wells Hook n’ Jook defeated the Rock Sound Coco Plums 19-12 in a well played game. The Coco Plums got out to an early lead but the Hook n’ Jook battled right back to take the lead and continued adding on the runs.

Minor Division - The Spanish Wells Sluggers defeated the Rock Sound Marlins 8-0. The Sluggers led 3-0 in the third inning and they added five more in the fifth inning while they held the Marlins scoreless for the six-inning game.

Junior Division - The Spanish Wells Harbourside Contenders won by default over the Rock Sound NuView Stingrays who could not field a team.

The second game of the playoff series is all set to continue 11:30am Saturday in Rock Sound.
