A 48-year-old man died in hospital yesterday after he was electrocuted in a freak accident while working on the Airport Gateway Project.

It happened around 9:30am in the area of John F Kennedy Drive and Blake Road.

Police say the victim was driving a dump truck, unloading fill in the area, when he came into contact with one of BEC’s  11,000 volt overhead lines.

Sources close to the incident said the electrical wire fell on the truck and the victim put his hands on the truck sending powerful shock waves through his body.

He was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital by ambulance where he died of his injuries a short time later.

Police have not released the identity of the victim but The Tribune understands he is a Jamaican who lived in Yellow Elder Gardens.

The Bahamas Electricity Corporation, in a press release, expressed condolences to the relatives and colleagues of the victim.

The statement also said: “The Corporation once again reiterates its commitment to working along with all partners – private and public – to ensure the safety of workers and the general public during any project that directly or indirectly involves BEC’s infrastructure. As the matter is under police investigation, BEC will not release any further details with regard to this incident.”
