Fr Fleischer to celebrate 50 years of priesthood

Anglicans in the Bahamas and in South East Florida are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the ordination of Anglican priest, the Reverend Dr Frederick Fleischer.

Father Fleischer served as an assisting priest, principal organist and minister of music at Christ Church Cathedral from 1973 to 1993 during the tenure of the late Dean William Granger and the late Dean Foster Pestaina. From 1977 to 1979 he interimed as priest-in-charge of Holy Trinity when Father Etienne Bowleg was on sabbatical.

“It will be a musical celebration on the grandest of scales,” said Adrian Archer, director of music at the Cathedral.

“Fr. Fleischer’s contribution to the musical life of the Cathedral, in particular, and the Bahamian society, on the whole, is immeasurable. It is our intent to say thank you in a manner he can appreciate while he is yet alive to do so,” said Mr Archer.

Artists appearing at the concert will include the Cathedral Choir, the Bel Canto Singers, the Anglican Chorale, the Highgrove Singers, the Anglican Youth Ensemble and solo artists Candace Bostiwck, Norma Ash, Cleveland Williams, Tychiko Cox and Joann Deveaux Callender.

“Matthew Steynor, former associate organist of the Cathedral and now serving as director of music at Trinity Cathedral, Miami will also travel to Nassau to perform on the Great Oberlinger,” said Mr Archer.

The concert takes place on Friday, May 31 at 8:00 PM and is free to the public, however and offering will be taken to aid the music department of the Cathedral.
