Hanna: PM could not interfere with minister in my day

By RASHAD ROLLE

FORMER Governor General and Deputy Prime Minister, Arthur D Hanna, told members of the Constitution Commission that during his tenure as a government official, then Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling could not interfere with his ministry.

As an example of interference by a Prime Minister in a Cabinet minister’s portfolio, he pointed to now DNA leader Branville’s McCartney’s past issues with his former party, the FNM.

Mr Hanna – who at different times in his career served as Minister of Education, Minister of Trade and Industry, Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Finance – said: “Branville McCartney thought he was a minister and didn’t like the way the Prime Minister was interfering with his ministry.

“That’s why he resigned. However, what he didn’t realise is that he wasn’t really a Minister. State ministers aren’t really ministers, and in my days the Prime Minister couldn’t interfere in my ministry.”
