While the mere mortals amongst us were dressing up as Miley Cyrus or a Roaring 20s diva for our Halloween parties last Saturday, Hollywood’s finest got dressed to the nines to honour film director Martin Scorsese and British artist David Hockney at the annual LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) Art + Film Gala).

And since it was a Gucci-sponsored affair, most of the stars stepped out wearing...well...Gucci.

Now let’s see who succeeded and who failed at wearing the luxury designer brand.

Kate Hudson

Karin says: “I can honestly say I have never seen Kate look better. This is an awesome dress for the actress. It’s sexy, it’s sleek and it’s sophisticated. Love the glittery halterneck which shows a lot skin, but manages not to look vulgar. Probably best dressed of the night.”

Cara says: “I love Kate and I love this dress...so elegant. Kate always looks so fabulous and movie star red carpet ready. She makes it look completely effortless. I love how she lets the dress speak for itself with the very barest of accessories. The look is flawless.”

Amy Adams

Karin says: “Terrible. I’m so sorry, Amy, but this is hideous. The material looks like cheap lamé, the colour does not suit her hair colour or complexion, and then to makes matters even worse, she’s got the those black peep-toe shoes that look absolutely hideous with this ensemble. Even her makeup looks terrible.”

Cara says: “See, I disagree with Karin, I think the colour is beautiful on her. It’s the only aspect of the look that I like, however. I love the shoes, but they don’t match the dress. And the cut of the dress just makes it look like a paper sack. Amy has such a nice figure, she doesn’t need to cover it up with a baggy, shapeless dress. I have always loved Amy’s hair and this here is no exception. It looks like a shampoo commercial.”

Drew Barrymore

Karin says: “Wow, I don’t think I would have recognised her. The kaftan type dress is not hideous, and I guess it can be interpreted as a casual chic maternity look, but it’s maybe a bit out of place on the red carpet. But girl, let’s talk about those shoes. They don’t match, they don’t create a nice contrast, they do absolutely nothing for this outfit.”

Cara says: “Drew is glowing. And I like the dress. While it isn’t a blow-me-away look, it is something I could see myself wanting to wear if I were expecting. However, I do agree that the shoes are a hot mess, as is that awful white clutch. On the plus side, her hair looks positively fabulous. Those pregnancy hormones sure are working!”

Salma Hayek

Karin says: “Very nice! Salma just doesn’t seem to age. Let us know where you’re hiding that fountain of youth!

This gown is the definition of elegant. Not too over-the-top, not too understated, but just right. Some fashionistas called it a boring look, but I don’t care, I love it. And I love her soft hair and makeup.”

Cara says: “Oooh, how pretty! Salma never disappoints; she reminds me of those Old Hollywood stars, always on point when they step out the house. Perfect hair, perfect make-up. I really like how the top of her dress is like a mix of a halterneck and a one-shoulder; it’s different from what you normally see. She looks simply radiant!”

Dakota Johnson

Karin says: “Oh dear, it looks like our future Anastasia Steele has no fashion sense whatsoever. Pity that. I mean, what is this? There’s lamé, there’s glitter, then there’s lace and a few feathers to top it all off. It looks like the designer just threw everything he had at a mannequin to see what would stick.

And last, but not least in this critique, the dress also ages her terribly.”

Cara says: “This is hideous and just wrong on so many levels. I can’t even put into words just how awful this dress is. I hope that she gets a new stylist soon, because she is about to be in one of the most anticipated movies of the decade (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) and she needs to get her movie star diva on, otherwise I fear she’s going to end up on many a ‘worst dressed’ list this season.”
