BSC SOFTBALL CLASSIC

THE Baptist Sports Council completed the first week of the 2013 Coca-Cola Softball Classic in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday with the Bahama Island Baptist Association (BIBA) making the most noise.

BIBA closed out the week on Saturday by out-slugging St Paul’s Baptist 18-14 to improve to 2-1 for second place behind the idled defending champions Golden Gates, who are leading at 2-0. St Paul’s dropped to 0-2 at the bottom of the pile with Salem Union.

Also on Saturday as both teams made their debut in the league this year, former champions Calvary Deliverance held off Men of Vision from Temple Fellowship 11-3 and in the first 19-and-under game played, Golden Gates doubled up Macedonia 10-5.

Here’s a summary of the games played:

BIBA 18, St Paul’s 14

Sammy Mullings went 4-for-5 with five RBI and five runs scored, Glenroy Saunders Jr was 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored and Brad Greenslade was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Saunders got the win and Harold ‘Banker’ Fritzgerald suffered the loss.

Garrett Strachan had a pair of two-run homers in his 3-for-4 day and Lamar Watkins was 2-for-4 with a solo homer, Angelo Dillett was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and Bernard Ferguson was 2-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored.

Calvary Deliverance 11, Men of Vision 3

Robert Cox had a perfect 3-for-3 day with a RBI triple, a three-run homer and a run scoring single, while Patrick Lockhart also had a perfect 3-for-3 day with a solo homer, a run scoring single and a RBI double in their men’s game.

Brad Wood Jr got the win and Ian Borgzorg was tagged with the loss.

Rudolph Fox was 2-for-2 and Chris McPhee was 1-for-3 with a run scored in a losing effort.

Golden Gates 10, Macedonia 5

Dino Sweeting and Peron Rolle were both 2-for-3 with two and one RBI respectively, scoring two runs apiece to go along with Anthony Bowleg’s two runs in their 19-and-under match-up.

Kili Kemp scored two runs in the loss.

SOFTBALL

NPOTSA ACTION

THE New Providence Softball Association’s best-of-five championship series was completed over the weekend at the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park at the Southern Recreation Grounds with the Sigma Crusaders beating the Dozer Heavy Equipment Pros 3-1.

The most valuable player (MVP) was Darren Bowleg, who had a batting average of .667. He had a total of 18 at-bat with 12 hits, eight runs, 15 runs batted in (RBI) and two home runs.

SOFTBALL

BAISS CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) will wrap up their 2013 softball season this week at Freedom Farm. The association will play their best-of-three championship series starting on Tuesday at 4pm.

Game two in each division will be played on Wednesday and if necessary, the third and deciding games will be played on Thursday. The junior girls and junior boys will begin play, followed by the senior girls and boys. Softball is the first discipline on the BAISS’ calender that will follow with basketball, starting next week at the various campuses.

VOLLEYBALL

GSSSA CHAMPIONS

THE Government Secondary Schools Sports Association has completed its 2013 volleyball classic, now they are gearing up for basketball. Last week, the CR Walker Knights clinched both the senior boys and girls’ volleyball titles, while the AF Adderley Fighting Tigers took home both the junior boys and girls’ crowns. The season was a competitive one and if that was any indication, league officials are looking forward to the start of their second discipline for the year when basketball gets started.

BASKETBALL

NPWBA ACTION

THE New Providence Women’s Basketball Association will be back in action this week at the DW Davis Gymnasium. The league had to take a break on Saturday because the DW Davis Gymnasuium was unavailable.

However, they will be back at the gym with a double header on tap on Tuesday night, starting at 7pm. The league will also play a double header on Thursday and a triple header on Saturday.

CYCLING

OCEAN PEARL RACE

THE 3rd annual Ocean Pearl Bike Race was held in Grand Bahama on Saturday with veteran Keith Major coming out as the champion.

The overall results were as follows:

BASEBALL

JBLN REGISTRATION

THE Junior Baseball League of Nassau completed its registration and draft process for the 2014 season. The season is slated to begin on January 18 as the JBLN celebrates 25 years as the premier youth baseball and softball organisation in the Bahamas.

The 2014 season will feature a record number of 475 boys and girls and 39 teams playing organised baseball and softball. Visit their new website www.jblnbaseball.com for further details.
