IN AN effort to bring much needed reforms to the prison system and upgrades to its infrastructure, the government plans to move the Correctional Services Bill 2013.

The current Prison Act, Minister of National Security Dr Bernard Nottage said, is 70 years old and the government believes that its provisions need upgrading.

He was speaking at the House of Assembly yesterday.

The new Bill will allow the prison system to be renamed the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services with a leadership including a Commissioner, a Deputy Commissioner and an assistant to the deputy.

In addition, inmates will be made to open an account with a reputable bank.

Further, inmates will be assessed by a correctional board and placed accordingly.
