Burrows makes debut in Finnish league

SEVERAL basketball leagues have tipped off on the international circuit and one prominent Bahamian national team member was the latest to debut.

Jaraun “Kino” Burrows has adapted quickly to his new surroundings in the Finnish Korisliiga league, and got off to a quick start with his Tapiolan Honka club.

Burrows opened the season this weekend with an impressive double double in a 76-59 win over Lapua. He finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds in just 26 minutes.

Despite a 3-8 finish from the field, he was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line in the win.

Tapiolan Honka will face Kataja today after a five-day layoff, in their second game of the season.

Burrows made the move to Finland after spending last season in the Swiss LNA league with the Starwings basketball club. He averaged 17.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 blocks per game.

His season was highlighted by a 33 point, 11-rebound performance in a December 14 win over Neuchatel.

This season, Burrows joined a traditionally contending Tapiolan Honka club who finished as division champions in 2012-13 and reached the division semifinals in 2011-12.

Since graduating from Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne in 2008, he has played professionally in Switzerland (Starwings), Slovakia (Rieker KN), Sweden (Sodertalje) and with the Music City Stars of the American Basketball Association.

In Japan, Magnum Rolle continues to lead the Mitsubishi Diamond Dolphins atop the standings of the Japanese National Basketball League.

The Diamond Dolphins continued their four-game winning streak with a dominant two-game series against the winless Kumamoto Volters this weekend.

In their latest outing on October 5, Rolle had his best offensive game of the season with a 30 point outburst in a lopsided 115-78 win. He shot 14-19 from the field and added eight rebounds.

In the first match of the series against the Volters, Rolle finished with 18 points and six rebounds on 8-13 shooting and from the field.

In four games thus far, he has posted averages of 21 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and shot 69 per cent from the field.

In a 77-65 win to open the season, Rolle finished with 16 points in just 18 foul- plagued minutes. He also added nine rebounds, two blocks and shot 6-9 from the field.

In game two, Mitsubishi escaped with a 79-76 win.

Rolle scored a side high 20 points and also chipped in with four rebounds, two blocks and three assists and shot 10-14 from the field.

The Diamond Dolphins are slated to face the Tsukuba Robots in their next series October 12-13.

In the the Czech Republic, Waltiea Rolle continued her productivity despite the struggles of her DSK Karlin club.

Just days after she was named the third best player in the ZBL league for the week, according to Eurobasket.com, Rolle followed up with her second double double of the season. She finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds on 7-14 shooting in an 84-63 loss to BLK Praha, October 5.

The results for Player of the Week or top performers are based on efficiency calculation, individual game results, importance of the game, and if player records double/double or triple/double. The decision is made by a number of scouts and journalists.

Rolle is averaging 14 points, 9.3 rebounds and one block per game on the year thus far.

DSK Karlinis slated to face Strakonice today, still seeking their first win of the season.

In the Middle East, Bennet Davis recently made the transition to fatherhood with the birth of his newborn son, and on the court is expected to join Israeli Premier league this season.

Now a member of the Barak GreenTops Netanya, Davis and his new club are scheduled to tip off the season October 13 against Maccabi Bazan Haifa.

GreenTops Netanya finished last season at 15-12, fourth in the regular season standings. They lost in the semifinals to eventual league runners-up, Maccabi Tel Aviv.

This spring, Davis played briefly for Santurce in Puerto Rico’s BSN League. In 12 games, he averaged 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in just over 18 minutes.

Earlier in the 2012-13 season, Davis suited up for Marso NYKK in Hungary where he averaged 16.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He has also played professionally in Finland (KTP), Japan (Niigata Albirex), Spain (Palencia) and most notably, with the Utah Flash of the NBA’s Developmental League.
