Demetrius making a name for himself

THE St Francis Xavier X-Men have struggled in the Canadian Inter-University sport standings recently, but Demetrius Ferguson continues to emerge as a top flight defensive back in the league.

The senior defensive back is ninth in the league with interceptions with three and sixth in fumble recoveries with two.

In the latest outing for the X-Men, a 27-11 loss to the Acadia Axemen, Ferguson finished with a season high 7.5 tackles. He also forced and recovered a fumble, his second of the year.

In a 42-13 loss to the Mount Allison Mounties on October 12, Ferguson caught his third interception of the season and followed with a 40-yard return.

The X-Men are currently at a three team tie in the AUS standings at 3-4. Saint Mary’s leads the division at 4-3.

After opening the season with two consecutive wins, St Francis Xavier went on to lose four of their next five games.

Ferguson had a career day against the Corncordia Stingers on September 14. He finished with 4.5 tackles, one forced fumble, and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 103-yard touchdown score. It was the second interception returned for a touchdown in Ferguson’s two year CIS career.

In his debut with the X-Men last fall, Ferguson intercepted a pass midway through the third quarter which he returned for a 78-yard touchdown.

St Francis is slated to face St Mary’s in the regular season finale 2pm October 26 in a a game with major playoff implications for both teams.

St Mary’s won the previous matchup 25-13 on September 27.
