FUMES that “smelled like diesel” caused the early dismissal of AF Adderley Junior High School yesterday.

Education Director Lionel Sands and school principal Mr Claridge told The Tribune the source of the fumes was unclear but the decision to let the school out after lunch was a precautionary measure after some persons took ill.

“The odour came from either Texaco (the gas station) or Shell opposite the school by the mall,” Mr Sands said, adding: “It was not something on our campus so it was something others would have to deal with. We requested the assistance of the Ministry of Environmental Health on the matter.”

As for the condition of persons at the school, Mr Sands said: “Some folks were not feeling well, but they were not sick enough to have to go to the hospital.”

The school is expected to resume as normal today according to Mr Claridge who said: “Once we see how things go, we may have a re-occurence of what happened yesterday or we may not.”
