Runners on their marks for big races in the Bahamas

RUNNERS have got it made over the next few months with opportunities to run some big races in the Bahamas.

There are just a few weeks to go before the Bahamas Half Marathon and 10k race, which starts and finishes at Arawak Cay on November 24 and offers chances for individuals, a three-person relay or a 10k.

Meanwhile the Bahamas Association of Athletic Coaches has decided to revive the once popular Bay Street Mile for local distance runners.

The one-mile race will return at 6am on Saturday, November 9, starting at the Straw Market on Bay Street and heading east where it will end up in front of BASRA on East Bay Street.

The Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend next January 18 and 19 offers a marathon, half marathon, relay and the popular Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure 5K.

It features runners from 25 countries and 31 states and is supported by a large volunteer contingent.

The Race for the Cure exceeded the 1800 participants mark in 2013. The organisation is the global leader of the breast cancer movement and the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

The race is an annual event not only to raise money for the beneficiaries but also to bring attention to a disease that affects many Bahamian women.

All of the money raised by the race stays in the Bahamas to fund breast cancer and women’s health programmes.

Beneficiaries for the events are: The Cancer Society of The Bahamas, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group, The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative and the Cancer Association of Grand Bahama.

The Tribune wants to hear from readers, your friends and work colleagues who are running in any of the upcoming races.
