THE Free National Movement’s Montagu constituency office sign was vandalised yesterday in an act that area MP Hubert Chipman said he hopes was not politically motivated.

Mr Chipman called the police after seeing the destroyed sign on the ground in front of his office.

Superintendent in charge of the Eastern Division Elaine Sands and a team of officers went to investigate the scene after receiving Mr Chipman’s call.

Police have said they will now patrol the area more often.

It is not known who vandalised the sign and what may have been the motive behind the act.

Noting that the election season has long been over, Mr Chipman said he hopes the incident was not politically motivated, but rather a simple act of mischief.

“I would like to think it’s just mischief, boys having fun, doing mischief,” he said. “Because if it’s politically motivated then I have to look over my shoulder. I hope and pray it’s not politically motivated because next thing I look around the building might be on fire.”

Mr Chipman said he goes to his constituency office every day for at least an hour and is there between 4pm and 7pm every Thursday.

The MP also noted that constituents can reach him by phone at all times.

He said he has not received any threats and was therefore shocked to see the vandalised sign when he went to the office yesterday.

“I thought I was doing the things in the community that people wanted me to do. I’m been doing my best,” he said.
