12-hour police shifts 'as long as needed'

POLICE will continue to work 12-hour shifts “as long as it is necessary and as officers have the capacity to provide it” said Minister of National Security Dr Bernard Nottage.

He said as more officers from the Defence Force become involved in the government’s latest crime strategy, the strategy will be evaluated.

“This obsession with the 12-hour shifts I find very interesting because this is a strategy that has been used by the police since my father was a policeman and he has been dead for 55 years,” Dr Nottage said.

He said while Defence Force officers were on the street they were working with Urban Renewal and were not working ‘as policemen’.

“They are going to be assisting policemen in the jobs that they have to do. These young men are very happy because they have something positive to do and they feel that they have to make a contribution to our country,” he said.
