SOFTBALL

NPSA POSTSEASON

THE Sigma Brackettes could become the first team to advance to the New Providence Softball Association’s best-of-seven championship series when they take their 2-0 lead in their best-of-five playoff series against the Electro Telecom Lady Hitters. Game three is all set for 7pm tonight at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.

The pennant winning Arnette’s Sporting Lounge Hitmen are also in the driver’s seat of their men’s series against the Miller Rams that will follow. The Hitmen own a commanding 2-0 lead in the series.

The winners of the two series will go on to play the winners from the other two series that were played on Saturday.

In the ladies’ encounter, the pennant winning Proper Care Pool Lady Sharks blasted the Sigma Wildcats 17-9 to snatch their 2-0 series lead.

The Andre Gardiner Buccaneers are leading 2-0 in their series against the Mighty Mitts after blowing them out 12-1 in their men’s showdown.

If all of the series are swept in three straight games, the NPSA will get the best-of-seven championship series started on Saturday night.

TENNIS

ROBERTS WINS TITLE

RISING young star Justin Roberts won the Apeldoorn Championship by defeating Botic Van de Zandschulp 4-6, 6-2 and 6-1 for his first Open singles title over the weekend. Roberts was featured in a Dutch newspaper following the victory.

CYCLING

TOUR DE NEW PROVIDENCE

THE Bahamas Cycling Federation and the New Providence Cycling Association are scheduled to host the Tour De New Providence around the western end of the island September 28-29. The weekend will get started on September 28 with the stage one individual timed trials for all categories competing over a three-mile course. That will be followed by stage II with the competitors competing in a 24 and 12-mile road race. Then on Sunday, the long road race, ranging from 50 miles for the senior competitors to 18 miles for the juniors. The cyclists who complete the stages with the fastest recorded times will be declared winners.

SOFTBALL

EXUMA ACTION

THE Exuma Softball Association hosted its All-Star Classic on Saturday, and from all indications from Exuma, it was the most exciting showdown in quite some time.

The Pressure All-Stars edged the Police Crimestoppers 7-6 in seven innings. The game was tied 1-1 up to the fifth inning before the Pressure Stars scored four runs and the Police Stars could only come up with one in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.

Jeffery Johnson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and scored on a throwing error to lead the Pressure All-Stars. Dezon Curry went 3-for-4, scoring three runs and Gary Darville, Reno Curling and Kola Richardson were all 3-for-4 with a run scored, while 14-year-old Kirklyn Deleveaux stepped up like a star going 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Garth Rolle was the winning pitcher and he helped his own cause by going 2-for-4.

For the Police Stars, Kevin Ellis went 4-for-4, scoring two runs with three RBI, Ernest McKenzie was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Jatero Rahming, Johnny Gray and Tanai Brown all went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

SOFTBALL

NPOTSA ACTION

THREE of the four spots have been secured for the New Providence Oldtimers Softball Association’s divisional championships following the league’s playoff action at the Archdeacon William Thompson Softball Park, Southern Recreation Grounds, over the weekend.

Bahamas Welding and Fire wrapped up their series against the Stubbs Construction and will now take on Cabinet World, who prevailed over the Q-Club Divers. Meanwhile, the Crusaders are into the other divisional final after they disposed of Da Home Boyz. The Crusaders are now waiting on the winner of the match-up between the Dozer Heavy Equipment Pros and Da Boyz.

Here’s a summary of the matches played over the weekend:

BWF 10, Stubbs Construction 8

Ivan Hanna got the win and Alfred Munnings was tagged with the loss.

Crusaders 20, Home Boys 11

Anthony Rolle got the win and Sidney Thomas suffered the loss. The Crusaders advanced to their divisional final with the win.

Cabinet World 16, Q-Club Divers 8

Steven Robinson was the winning pitcher and Emile Ledee picked up the loss.

Dozer Pros 18, Da Boyz 11

Don Dean got the win and Alvin Lightbourn was the losing pitcher.

Cabinet World 17, Q-Club Divers 14

Val Munroe was the winning pitcher and Lester Stuart was the loser. Cabinet World got into the divisional final with the win.

Bahamas Welding and Fire 19,

Stubbs Construction 11

Hector Rolle was the winner on the mound and Gilbert Simmons was the loser. Bahamas Fire and Welding got into the divisional final with the win.

SOFTBALL

BANKERS LEAGUE

THE Bankers Softball League continued its post-season play on Saturday at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex with three exciting games. The results are as follows:

Scotiabank 15, Citibank 14

Emile Ledee went 3-for-4 with a double and two home runs, driving in four runs and scoring three times to lead the winners. Arthur Hamilton was 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored and Hector Rolle was 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored.

Lester Dean got the win and Teddy Sweeting suffered the loss.

Ryan Johnson was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, two RBI and three runs scored and Lionel Ferguson was 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBI and three runs scored.

Fidelity 19, Colina 8

Stenard Duncombe went 5-for-5 with a double, two homers, three RBI and five runs scored to lead the winners. Chavez Thompson was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored and David Gardiner was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rory Newbold was the winning pitcher and Tim Sawyer was tagged with the loss.

McNeil Albury was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two run scored in a losing effort. Greg Burrows was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, a RBI and two runs scored.

Royal Bank 11, CIBC/FCIB 8

Kris Turnquest had a perfect 4-for-4 day with three doubles, a homer, five RBI and three runs scored in the win. Julian Seymour was the winning pitcher and Robert Cox got the loss.

Daniel Cash went 1-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored and Pat Lockhart was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

In the only other game scheduled, BAF won by default over Commonwealth Bank. The league is slated to continue play on Saturday.
