A FIGHT at the Government High School on Wednesday afternoon resulted in a student being admitted to hospital and losing a tooth, The Tribune understands.

According to reports, the teenage boy was involved in an altercation with two other students, believed to be brothers, and was beaten with brass knuckles.

His face was injured and his front tooth knocked out.

The teen was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was treated and discharged. Police have two juveniles in custody in connection with the incident.

Calls to the school for comment were not returned up to press time.

Director of Education Lionel Sands said he was not aware of the fight.

The incident comes one week after Mr Sands said violence in schools was on the decrease.

At a press conference earlier this month, Mr Sands said anecdotal evidence suggests the number of incidents has decreased marginally.

He said: “We’ve seen a decline in the incidences happening in our schools over the last several months actually starting from September of last year up to June of this year, where the number of incidences have not been as frequent as in the past and so that would suggest to us that there has been an impact with the police on the school campuses.

“I wouldn’t say it’s very significant because there are certain schools where you don’t have this even without police, there are certain schools where [incidents] do not happen.”

Mr Sands said the drop in violence could also be attributed to a “beefed up” security system, featuring both government-hired and private guards.
