Fencing making a comeback

FENCING, an Olympic sport, has relaunched in the Bahamas under the direction of Anthony D Lewis, a veteran fencer with 40 years of experience.

In the 1970s, fencing was very popular in Freeport, Grand Bahama, under Captain Larry Kominski. But after his death in 1978, it faded.

Through a grant from the Bahamas Olympic Committee, Lewis was given equipment and international coaches training to restart the programme. “I intend to teach the foil, so people can enjoy fencing as a sport,” said Lewis. “Fencing is about discipline and order so it is a great sport for young people.”

There are also many scholarships for fencing in universities in the United States, Canada and Europe.

The Olympic fencing programme was relaunched with an initial club at All Star Family Centre on Joe Farrington Road where they meet at 10am on Saturdays.

In the coming weeks, fencing programmes are expected to be launched at the Carmichael Road Athletic Centre and at Akhepran School on Bernard Road.

Persons interested in fencing should contact the All Star Family Centre at 364-6773.
