Beloved pastor dies at age of 91

Father William Marshall Bishop passed away on September 2, at 9:50 p.m. at his home in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada, at the age of 91 years. Funeral service and interment were held on September 7, at St. John’s Anglican Church, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Father Bishop came to the Bahamas and served as Principal of St. John’s College from 1957 to 1967. He returned home and then came back to serve as principal of the then Freeport Anglican High School (now Bishop Michael Eldon School) from 1975 to 1978. During his tenure he impacted thousands of children. In addition to his academic role, he also assisted in various parishes and connected with many families throughout the diocese.

When Father Bishop retired from active priestly ministry in 1987, he moved back to Wolfville, where Acadia University is located. In fact, his home is literally across the street from the campus. Over the years he was very kind to many Bahamian students who attended that academic institution, doing whatever he could to show hospitality, and to help in times of need or distress.

Father Bishop was famous for the hosting of his annual reception in honour of Bahamian students, which he hosted in his home. This event was one of the special events that Bahamian students studying at Acadia and surrounding academic institutions looked forward to with great anticipation. He hosted the annual reception until advancing age and declining mobility forced him to discontinue it.

The clergy and laity of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands offer condolences to his son, Avard, and his daughter, Roberta, and their families.
