While the Minister of National Security, and the Bell that doesn*t seem to ring too often these days are storming the media and bragging how their crime fighting plans are working it appears that pressure is building and we are set to face another spate of blood shed. While the police have virtually increased its manpower by at least 50 percent with extended shifts more needs to be done to get persons on bail for murder and other serious offences off the streets, before the courts, and the guilty ones behind bars. Otherwise the crime and violence may explode during the holiday season, when criminals suspect the police will let their guard down. And what if that fire through Homestead Street turns out to be arson? And the intention was to kill someone in that house? That would make this summer the most bloodiest in the history of the Bahamas with over TWENTY murders in less than four weeks!!!

Do you know why the national grade average is a "D"? D is for DRUGS. WE have a drug epidemic in this country, New Providence especially, where 11 and 12 year olds are not only smoking marijuana but they can go out and buy drugs. High School (pardon the pun) students ( girls included) are smoking weed and bede cigarettes on their way to and from school. This affects their learning ability and eventually leads to crime and domestic violence. Call the detox unit at Sandilands and ask about the increase in young persons being admitted for drug abuse. Also ask about the younger ones, barely teenagers, who are being admitted for drug abuse. Persons who sell drugs to school children should get the most harshiest of punishment.

The minister of national security and "Da Bell" needs to address this problem forthwith. ONE suggestion is to put together a team of officers, nurses psychologists and visit every junior and senior school in the country. Teach the children the dangers of drug use and the eventual consequences. An ounce of prevention can stop a pound of weed (from being smoked)
