Marijuana and its effects

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Thank you for allowing me space in your valuable paper to give my views and warning on the brain-altering and addictive plant marijuana.

Such effect is activated when the leaves of this plant are smoked or otherwise inhaled by someone.

This fact was brought to my knowledge through a medical weekly magazine I read over nine years ago.

Now in recent times – two or so months back, this drug – also referred to as ‘“weed” was legalised in a state in the United States of America, plus previous to this two or more other states of the United States of America were allowed the growing and the consumption of marijuana.

Sometime between January and March of 2014, a delegation of a few top Bahamian Government officials attended a conference abroad where other foreign officials were also present; there were speculations that the legalisation of marijuana would be in that meeting discussions – with emphasis on the regulation of this drug for medical purposes; but, talking about for medical purposes, which will, of course, be something beneficial to all, the question is don’t a lot of prescription medicines taken for various complaints, contain extracts from the marijuana plant?

And this from many years ago. One should know so.

Again one must stress that sometimes “what might be ok with the goose, may not always be ok with the gander;” and, definitely the smoking of “grass” as it is sometimes called, or, the regulating of its general use and growth, in the Bahamas would be catastrophic for the inhabitants, merely knowing a little of the Bahamians mentality “Watch D” believes along with others, an action like that would cause chaos in this country, for as it now stands one can easily see, although illegal, the negative impact marijuana use and its growth has upon our society – crime; and lawlessness in general are some of the “seeds” so to speak, yes, are bi-products of marijuana – don’t do it!

We also know that the Bahamas is in the war against drugs, so don’t let it appear as though we are trying to defeat our own purpose by legalising or/and its marijuana so-called regulation.

This has got to be the most uninformed 'Letter to the Editor' this paper has published. Do you just let anybody write whatever they'd like?
