Day two of the 2nd Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, saw three of the four disciplines representing the Bahamas in action.

Of the three, the two-member tennis team only has the mixed doubles left and the one-man sailing team is trying to make up some ground.

The three-member swimming team had the day off. Still waiting to start competing is the eight-member team for athletics with the track and field competition not scheduled to start until Thursday.

Tennis

One day after they both got eliminated in the men’s singles, Rodney Carey and Justin Roberts got knocked out of the main doubles draw at the Tennis Academy Court. The duo were beaten in straight set scores of 6-1, 6-3 by the No.1 ranked team of Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev from Russia.

Carey, 17, lost his first round singles to Juan Jose Rosas from Peru 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Roberts, also 17, went down 6-2, 6-4 to Lee Duckhee from Korea.

The Bahamian pair, however, are still alive as they get a rare opportunity to match up with players from other countries in the mixed doubles. Carey will take the court with Simona Heinova and Roberts will match up with Renata Zarazua Ruckstuhl from Mexico. The first round for the mixed doubles is set to start today.

Sailing

The sailing competition got started on Monday at the Jinniu Lake Sailing Venue. In the Byte CII - Men’s One Person Dinghy, flag carrier Paul de Souza placed 11th overall in the first race that was won by Pedro Marcondes Correa from Brazil. In the second race, de Souza dropped all the way to 24th place with Asri Azman of Malaysia taking the top spot.

Overall, de Souza sits in 198th place with 35 points. Brazil is out front with five points. The next three races - third, fourth and fifth - in the series will be held today, while three more - sixth, seventh and eighth - are on Wednesday. After a day off on Thursday, two more races - ninth and tenth - are set for Friday. The medal round will be conducted on Saturday.
