Broadcaster signs new five-year-deal with union

THE Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas and the Bahamas Communications and Public Officers Union signed a five-year collective bargaining agreement for the employees of the corporation on Friday.

BCB Chairman Rev Dr William Thompson called the signing “an historic occasion” which came after seven months of intensive negotiations.

Dr Thompson thanked the union for the “many hours” spent over the negotiating table and expressed the desire of the corporation to see a “happy people in a happy work environment” and pledged to continue to work to improve working conditions.

Bernard Evans, president of the BCPOU, said that although “this is not a contract where we got all we wanted. . .we made some progress levelling the playing field.”

He added that he was “somewhat pleased with what we have accomplished.”

Diana Swann, the corporation’s general manager, said she was probably “the first general manager who had been a member of the union so I know the importance of a good contract.”

Ms Swann added: “One thing I would ask (of the union) is that before you take drastic action, please allow my team and me to come up with a resolution.”

Saying that the employees’ first lump sum payment “was already in the bank”, the chairman closed the gathering by reiterating that the management of the Corporation would endeavour to work with the union to create a happy staff.
