SENATOR Alex Storr, Acting Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, denied that a purported press statement circulated on Facebook yesterday emphasising that the Fort Charlotte branch of the PLP maintains confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Perry Christie, was authentic.

The statement, which was later deleted from Facebook, followed Fort Charlotte MP Dr Andre Rollins’ call in the House of Assembly on Wednesday for new political leadership because of what he thinks are the shortcomings of current leaders in the country. The purported press statement seemed to distance the Fort Charlotte branch of the PLP from that constituency’s MP in light of his comments.

The statement expressed unwavering support in Mr Christie and his government’s commitment to improving the lives of Bahamians. It also insisted that people should ignore the rhetoric of those with “personal, destructive” agendas against the PLP.

Donna Moxey is the chairman of the Fort Charlotte branch of the PLP, The Tribune understands. While she could not be contacted for comment yesterday, Mr Storr spoke on her behalf, saying she did not release the statement.

He added that only the chairman or deputy chairman of the PLP could approve the release of such a statement.

While he acknowledged the tension Dr Rollins’ recent criticisms of the PLP establishment has created in the party, Mr Storr emphasised that the party is not going to make a “bad situation worse.”

Another source close to the situation told The Tribune that a statement from the Fort Charlotte branch of the PLP expressing its confidence in Mr Christie’s leadership while denouncing Mr Rollins’ stance against his party’s leader may be in the works, but it certainly has not received approval for release from top PLP officials.
