BORCO honoured for 1m injury-free hours

Bahamas Oil Refining Company (BORCO) staff have been rewarded for working one million hours without a ‘Lost Time Injury’ since February 2011.

This means there were no injuries received at work that were severe enough to require an employee to miss a day or longer of work. Khalid Muslih, senior vice-president at BORCO’S owner, Buckeye Partners, flew to Grand Bahama to congratulate and award staff at their in-house presentations.

In addition to rewarding the Asset Team as a whole for this safety record, each BORCO department was recognised for the hours contributed to setting this unheard record. The Administrative Department (human resources, IT, administration and finance) achieved 109,000 hours without injury; the Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Department achieved 103,000 hours; Land Operations achieved 292,000 hours; Marine Operations 314,000 hours; and the Maintenance Department 182,000 hours.

“We are proud of our employees achieving a milestone of working one million hours without a lost time injury,” said Robert Gaffney, vice-president of international operations at Buckeye Bahamas.

“It demonstrates their commitment to working safely and looking out for one another. It also aligns with Buckeye’s mission and unwavering commitment to safety. Our goal each day is for employees to return home to their families at the end of the day in the same condition or better than when they arrived.”

Certain departments have gone years without any recordable injuries. These include the Administrative Department; Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Department, which have all gone over five years injury free.
