TROPICAL Storm Cristobal was expected to dump from four to eight inches of rain on the southern islands of the Bahamas yesterday as it moved through the country with winds up to 45mph, which were expected to intensify.

Inagua, Mayaguana and the Turks and Caicos Islands were expected to be most affected yesterday.

The storm is expected to strengthen within the next 48 hours and is expected to move northwest. Although forecasters have not determined to what degree the storm will strengthen, they expect it to be a category one hurricane by the time it leaves the Bahamas on Wednesday.

The storm is expected to pass through the central parts of the country today.

The storm, which is moving at 7mph, has been affecting the south east Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Cristobal is the third named storm of the season.

A tropical storm warning is currently in effect for the central and southern Bahamas, including Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, Mayaguana, Inagua, Cat Island, Exuma, Eleuthera, Andros and New Providence.

Boaters are advised to remain in port.
