BTC upgrades 67 mobile locations

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) is enhancing 67 existing mobile sites throughout the Bahamas as a part of its recently-announced $26 million network upgrades.

BTC is increasing its LTE coverage, which offers speeds that are five times’ faster than the regular 4G experience.

Leon Williams, its chief executive, said: “We are continuing to make meaningful progress with our ‘Upgrade Bahamas’ initiative. Our $26m investment in the mobile network is a testament to this.

“Our customers expect us to provide quality service every day, and we always strive to deliver the same. Our engineers have worked tirelessly over the last few months, increasing our LTE coverage, and at the end of this fiscal period we are proud to report that we will have near 100 per cent LTE coverage in the country.”

BTC launched LTE earlier this year in New Providence, Abaco, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera. By the close of 2014, there will be a total of 67 LTE-ready mobile sites throughout the country.

To date, Grand Bahama and Abaco have 11 sites each, and there are 16 in New Providence. Eleven sites will be added in Andros, and there will be three each in Acklins and San Salvador. Cat Island will have seven LTE sites. By March 2015, BTC will have a 107 LTE sites nation-wide.
