St Paul's and Golden Gates open best-of-three playoffs in win column

ST Paul’s and Golden Gates opened their respective co-ed and men’s best-of-three playoff series by knocking off Macedonia in the Baptist Sports Council’s 2014 Coca-Cola Softball Classic.

In the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Tuesday night, St Paul’s nipped Macedonia 9-8 to take a 1-0 lead in their series slated to continue 6pm Saturday.

It was a double dose of defeat for Macedonia as Golden Gates men pulled off a 14-7 victory to take their 1-0 lead in their men’s series scheduled to continue 7pm Saturday.

Tonight, the other half of the series is all set to continue with game two with both defending champions holding the upper hand. At 7pm, Golden Gates could wrap up their co-ed series against St John’s, while St Paul’s could do the same against Faith United at 8pm.

Tuesday night’s games:

St Paul’s 9, Macedonia 8

In the co-ed game, with three runs in the top of the fifth, St Paul’s managed to hold off Macedonia, who came within one in the bottom of the frame for the final score.

Zhivargo Archer led the St Paul’s offensive attack by going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a double, scoring two runs. Vonetta Nairn was 1-for-2 and Deandra Hart 1-for-3 as they both scored two runs. Lamar Watkins was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored and Deval Storr was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Harold’ Banker’ Fritzgerald got the win and Duval Storr came in relief for the save.

D’Kyle Rolle came in for starter Michael Ingraham to get tagged with the loss.

Sheena Taylor was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Michael Ingraham was 3-for-3 and Waymond Demeritte had a solo in-the-park home run and added an RBI sacrifice fly in a losing effort.

Golden Gates 14, Macedonia 7

Sherman Ferguson went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, scoring three times to pace Golden Gates as they doubled up Macedonia men.

Jordan Gibson was was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a double, scoring three times, Nardo Gilbeert was hitless, but had two RBI and scored a run, Deandra Rigby was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Ken Wood Jr was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored to help out.

Alfred ‘Skater’ Munnings went the distance for the win. D’Kyle Rolle suffered the loss. Tim Clarke and Marco Lightbourne were both 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, Courtney Smith was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored and Trae Gilbert was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the losers.
